(26/08/2010)   Worth Reading
I found this book quite profound as if God was talking to me. I must admit that you will need an open mind to read this book because of some of the ideas about religion and such. Being a catholic, but not really practicing it because of its dogma I found parts where I really needed to read and then re-read it to absorb was was said.
I however found this book to be so enlightening that I make a point to read it often. Its message is simple, be true to yourself and follow your heart which is love. Not bad advice. I truly think this book is worth reading and find out for yourself. There will obviously be skeptics who view this book as rubbish but only you can determine if its rubbish or not. I think if more people took this approach we would have a safer, kinder world. You be the judge

This is not at all Christian. It is, however, completely representative of the therapeutic, self-fulfilling kindliness that passes for Christianity in America these days. If that's all you're looking for, here's a deception that will effectively lull you into a warm, cozy and shallow life of obtuseness. It's like deliberately choosing to turn yourself into a "smiley face". What kind of person settles for that?

If you are Christian, stick with the Bible and your church. Those provide the challenging truths a person needs to understand, along with the reassurance and affirmation that keeps us striving to be fully human, the likeness and image of God.

This book is truly incredible and has changed my outlook on life and has affected how I live day to day. From some of the most fundamental concepts to some of life's most common questions this book has given me an opportunity to understand my place in the universe.

(25/07/2010)   Great Philosophy, Bad Taste In Pretending it Was God Talking
As an author myself, a few years ago I had an idea to write a book called, "A Conversation with God". It was to be about a man who meets God and asks all the important questions in life. As the author, I would have God respond with my philosophy and ideas on how I think everything works. To my amazement, this has already been done! But one huge difference: mine would have been an admitted work of pure fiction.

In the book "Conversations with God" by Neale Donald Walsch, Walsch makes the bold claim that God was talking to him, not through him, or inspired him... actually talking to him. The book is a continuing dialog between himself and "God", where he asks the questions and God answers.

First the good: This is an awesome book. I was sold on the book when I Googled the author and watched a few of his videos. He has a great sense of humor and told very entertaining stories. The book is a reflection of the author's relaxed style of speaking and good-natured humor. His view on God and life in general makes sense - much more so than many ancient religions and dogmas. He says just enough to upset the Christians as well as atheists. I like an author who is not afraid to ruffle everyone's feathers.

Now the bad. I believe the author is deceiving us. Based on where he was in his life, it is quite clear that he would do just about anything to bounce back from the "Hell on earth" in which he resided. A pretend conversation with God might sell a few books, but a REAL conversation with God, now that is recipe for a best-seller. But who am I to know that God did not choose him to reveal himself to the world? I am a thinking man who took this author's own advice (or God's advice - I forget) and thought this through instead of being a mindless follower.

1) His life called for desperate measures - this claim is pretty desperate
2) "God's message" majorly contradicts the Bible and Koran, so if he is right, the Bible is wrong
3) God could easily make someone fully understand without using words - God would not use this Ouija board like process
4) He asks such stupid questions - these are questions he should ask his psychotherapist
5) This God is more like Anthony Robbins than God
6) Based on the author's background and 20 year spiritual search, everything "God" says seems to match up nicely with different parts of many belief systems. If he does really believe he heard God, it was most likely his own subconscious
7) He fails to ask for proof. Not proof of God (what would that be after all), but proof that he talking to someone who is indeed "all-knowing". Who shot JFK? Where can I find the ark of the covenant (if it exists)? Can you tell me an event that will happen in the near future in great detail? How can we cure cancer? Can you tell me something that nobody yet knows that can be scientifically proven?... I just thought of these now. He supposedly had one year to ask these kind of questions.

The fact is, there are hundreds, perhaps THOUSANDS of people who claim that God speaks to them. Until someone provides some pretty darn good evidence (anything in #7 will do), we have to write them off as "confused".

But like I said, it really was a great book with some great philosophical ideas. I just wish the author was more honest about the source.

I have read the book once and have listened to it in it's entirety 4 times. This is my Bible. It has comfort me many times through the loss of parents and being broken heart by who I thought was the love of my life.

Through the Audio version I have always felt as though God was talking directly to ME. But every couple of years, I need to remind myself how much God loves me and is always there for me.

Even now, as I write this review, I feel like God is watching over my shoulder and I feel so much better about this day.
